The Performance Guarantee
Promises of top-tier search engine rankings or technical speed scores in an impossibly short timeframe.
“We guarantee first-page Google rankings within 30 days”
What this pattern means
No one—not even Google employees—can guarantee a first-page ranking for a specific keyword in 30 days. Search engine algorithms are proprietary and ever-changing. Anyone making this promise is either using 'black-hat' SEO techniques that will eventually get your store penalized, or they are lying to get your initial payment. Genuine SEO is a long-term game of content, technical health, and authority. Shortcuts lead to bans, not sales. If it sounds too good to be true in e-commerce, it usually is.
The psychology of the scam
This tactic uses classic social engineering to create a sense of trust or urgency. By following a behavioral script, the actor attempts to bypass your natural skepticism and move you closer to a payment or access request before you've performed a full background check.
What to do instead
- Slow down the conversation and ask for verified case studies of live stores.
- Avoid making any access or payment decisions during the initial outreach phase.
- Verify their public identity (LinkedIn/Portfolio) through a separate search.
- Trust your intuition—if the outreach feels rehearsed or “too good to be true,” it usually is.
