The Fake Authority Signal

Using the 'Shopify Partner' badge as if it were a high-level security clearance or an endorsement from Shopify itself.

Common Trigger Phrase

As a certified Shopify Partner and expert...

What this pattern means

Becoming a 'Shopify Partner' requires filling out a form and takes about two minutes. It is NOT a certification of skill, honesty, or reliability. Predatory actors use this badge to create an unearned sense of authority and trust. Real expertise is demonstrated through a verified portfolio of live stores, public case studies, and clear technical communication. If their primary credential is a badge that anyone with an email address can get, you should start looking for the exit.

The psychology of the scam

This tactic uses classic social engineering to create a sense of trust or urgency. By following a behavioral script, the actor attempts to bypass your natural skepticism and move you closer to a payment or access request before you've performed a full background check.

What to do instead

  • Slow down the conversation and ask for verified case studies of live stores.
  • Avoid making any access or payment decisions during the initial outreach phase.
  • Verify their public identity (LinkedIn/Portfolio) through a separate search.
  • Trust your intuition—if the outreach feels rehearsed or “too good to be true,” it usually is.
